"Summer's over." Those words have been going through my head ever since my kids started school last week. It's a line from the John Wayne movie The Cowboys, only when I hear it in my mind my three-year-old nephew Theo is quoting it, as he often does when he plays cowboy.
We went up to a ranch in the mountains last Saturday. The kids and I played while A. worked all day, and when he was done we went for a walk out to the pasture. As I snatched that picture of my family, I wished I could freeze time for just a little while, and keep my kids little. Reagan started kindergarten last Friday, and I was totally that mom--wiping the tears out of my eyes as I left the classroom after dropping her off. When did she get so old?
Fall is my favorite season. The past few days, every time I walk outside in the morning I feel that unmistakable "fall is coming" chill in the air, and a thrill of excitement goes through me. I'm ready for pumpkin...everything, and apple cider, hoody weather, and changing leaves. When I was a kid I loved the first week of school, and going school supply and school clothes shopping remained one of my favorite past-times all the way through college. I think I'm as excited as my kids are when their school supply lists come out each year.
But I'm always a little sad when school starts back, too. I love having my kids home with me in the summer, and those first few days of school feel pretty lonely. I'm already excited for Thanksgiving break when I get to have them home with me for a whole week again, and changing out of our pajamas is optional.
What about you guys? When you were a kid, did you dread going back to school or look forward to it? If you have kids, how do you feel about the start of the year? What's your favorite season?
I always hated the start of school because it meant the first swim meet of the short course season was almost there (and I hated short course!) I've always looked forward to fall, but I blame that on Hocus Pocus.

DeleteI wish I could find a state that was perpetual fall I would move there in a heartbeat! I am torn with school starting...I have one in school and one at home so I don't get the full effect yet. I hope your kids had a great first week!

DeletePart of me is so tempted to pull them out now, but I have to remind myself to enjoy the shorts, skirts, and sandals while I can still wear them because come March I'll be dying to pull out my summer clothes.
DeleteI dreaded school. Not the learning part, that was great. The lonely, trying to make new friends part. And the boredom part. I did always love shopping for school supplies. I remember one year I tried to make myself write reports about animals during the summer. :) Spring is my favorite season. I love the time when the whole world seems new and growing. It seems like nature has a contagious excitement in the spring.

DeleteI've been feeling that chill in the air too! We homeschool here so back to school looks a bit different but it's still a transition from spontaneous dips in the pool and late nights, late mornings. We all resist it a bit, but tend to enjoy the routine once we get back in the flow of things. Happy almost fall!!

DeleteFall is my favorite seasons too. Back to school always feels like a fresh start - - the nip in the air always reminds me of field hockey - - and of course, buying new school supplies remains a highlight of the year (even if I'm not a student or classroom teacher anymore!). I love so much about living in Florida, but one thing I miss is having the leaves change and the weather get crisp in cool in September. I love getting cozy in scarves and boots with a mug of warm goodness in my hands. We actually have a November trip to north Georgia planned just so we can see the leaves changing somewhere and have a good excuse to build a fire in the fireplace. It can't come soon enough!
